| Carlisle Cathedral Organ |
The present organ was originally the work of Henry Willis in 1856, only his second cathedral project but incorporating many new innovations. It was possibly only the third organ in the world to have thumb pistons! Minor additions were made in 1875, including the 32' pedal pipes on the west side. The fourth manual was added in 1907 by Harrison & Harrison. In 1930 the Choir division was moved from within the main case to the south aisle, where the Positive of the present organ is still situated. A major redesign was completed in 1962 by J W Walker & Sons, when much of the pipework was remodelled along classical lines.
In 1997, David Wells carried out major refurbishment. The tone was modified to regain some of the Willis and Harrison characteristics, and several new stops were added, together with a modern combination system. The new stops are marked by a * in the specification below.
